"Think of it like a car engine," Holley explains. "You can tune the same engine to run quietly and efficiently, or you can open it up for raw power. Pyrotechnicians are essentially doing the same thing with chemistry."

Altitude Changes Everything

Here's something most spectators never consider: where a shell detonates in the sky dramatically affects how it sounds on the ground.

Professional shows launched from venues like Macon's Central City Park or along the Ocmulgee riverfront send shells 300 to 600 feet into the air before detonation. At that altitude, the sound wave has time to spread and attenuate before reaching the crowd. That's why a professional show can feel thunderous without necessarily being as damaging to your hearing as a consumer firework going off ten feet away in a neighbor's driveway.

Backyard consumer fireworks — the kind sold at roadside stands throughout Middle Georgia every summer — typically detonate at much lower altitudes. Some of the louder consumer items, like aerial repeaters and M-80-style salutes (where legal), can actually expose nearby bystanders to more concentrated sound energy than a professional shell fired at proper altitude. You'll still feel the concussive thump. You'll still hear the crowd react. You just won't be absorbing the full acoustic assault.

For closer situations — think standing near consumer fireworks in a neighborhood setting — Dr. Osei recommends earmuffs rather than plugs, especially for children. Kids' ear canals are smaller and more sensitive, and their hearing loss can have long developmental consequences.

Venue-Specific Tips for Middle Georgia

Not every fireworks experience in the Macon area is the same, and your hearing protection strategy probably shouldn't be either.

Large open-air venues like stadium shows or riverfront events give you the advantage of distance and open space. Sound disperses more efficiently outdoors, and most spectators are naturally positioned far enough from the launch zone that standard foam plugs offer adequate protection.

Neighborhood and suburban displays are a different story. Consumer fireworks used in residential areas — especially in tighter suburban streets common in parts of north Macon or subdivisions around Byron and Warner Robins — can create a chaotic acoustic environment where you're surrounded by multiple sound sources at unpredictable distances. In those situations, earmuffs or higher-rated plugs are worth the minor inconvenience.

Indoor or semi-enclosed venues that incorporate fireworks or pyrotechnic effects (think indoor concerts or covered amphitheaters) represent the highest risk scenario. Sound bounces off hard surfaces and concentrates in ways that open-air shows never do. If you're attending any kind of show with indoor pyrotechnics, treat it like a live concert and protect accordingly.

One of the most common pushbacks audiologists hear is that ear protection "ruins the experience." It's an understandable instinct — fireworks are supposed to be felt as much as seen. But modern hearing protection has come a long way from the bright orange foam plugs of decades past.

High-fidelity earplugs, originally designed for musicians, reduce overall volume while preserving sound clarity. Brands like Eargasm and Loop have become popular at concerts and outdoor events precisely because they don't turn the world into a muffled blur. They just turn the volume down to a safer level.
